Chatelain, Treatise on equine medicine, 1817
Présentation
René-Julien Chatelain, born 15 March 1771 at Versailles, joined the army in 1788 as a soldier.
He had a distinguished military career during the Revolution and the Empire, notably in Italy and Egypt, at Eylau and Wagram, and then in Spain.
He received the Légion d’honneur in 1804. In 1808, he received a ‘dotation’ of funds from lands in Westphalia. He was promoted to the rank of Officer of the Légion d’honneur in 1809, then made Chevalier de l’Empire in 1810. In 1814, he became Chevalier de Saint-Louis by order of the King, and was subsequently promoted to Colonel and Baron d’Empire during the Hundred Days.
He was placed in retirement in 1816 at the time of the Second Restoration.
During the July Monarchy, he returned to duty for a year as the commander of Oléron.
After deciding to take his retirement definitively in 1832, he spent his final years in Paris.
He served successively in:
the Angoulême regiment
the 26th Cavalry regiment
the 15th Dragoons regiment

The group of works is composed of the archives
of René-Julien Chatelain (1771-1836)
and of his son, Julien-A. Chatelain (1817-1898).
